Abstract

Security incidents on the Internet continue to grow at an alarming rate. An Internet community once unaware of the security risks of using the Internet is growing in awareness. Awareness however is not enough. To date, most security documentation covers either problems or solutions. Documentation providing a complete view of computer security issues, presenting both the problems and possible solutions, is needed. We attempt to provide this complete view by combining the hacker and the system admnistrator into one person. Using a hacker's approach to security, we present the problems that exist in host and network security. Using a system admnistrator's approach to security, we present the solutions to the problems highlighted. The most notable solution to host and network problems is a combined packet filtering and application proxying firewall. A hacker's viewpoint on finding security holes, a system admnistrator's viewpoint on fixing security holes and a firewall is the best security measure we have to date.
