Security issues with regard to host and network solutions have been presented. The paradigms employed with security issues have been presented in both a theoretical and in a practical way. Documentation on security tends to be biased towards or against the hacker. We hope to have bridged this gap somewhat by presenting both sides of the coin.
We have presented security problems on the host and the network in a theoretical and technically uncompromising manner. This we presented as part of the hacker training of the syshackadminer. Real-life examples of exploitation of security problems on a host and network level were discussed and illustrated. Problems in security both on the host and network levels exist and cannot be ignored. We have shown some of the reasons these problems exist and how they can be exploited.
We also presented solutions to host and network security problems. This formed part of the system administrator training of the syshackadminer. Awareness of the problems is as important as being able to find and apply working solutions to them. Here too, we showed real life examples solving the problems to host and network security. We showed the firewall as a potential global solution to some of the problems that exist both on the host and on the network level. Our firewall discussion went further to show that an application gateway or packet filter is not enough to cover the wide range of problems that exist. If a firewall is to be used to solve the problems that exist on networks, both firewalling paradigms have to be employed.
Our findings can be summarized as follows:
